Welcome to
JAELIO ACADEMY

Jaelio Academy is a place where private school meets homeschool. We are dedicated to providing a nurturing, around-the-table type of environment where students can feel comfortable and at home while they are learning. Our goal is to inspire and empower the next generation of learners.

About Us

Jake and Nicole are a parent duo with six kids and nearly two decades of combined experience in the classroom and in school administration.

Most recently, Jake was the headmaster of a private academy and Nicole was the office administrator at another private academy. Together they have numerous years of experience in the classroom — teaching all academic subjects to a wide range of class levels from preschool through high school.

Outside of Jaelio, Jake is also finishing up his Masters Degree in Philosophy through the Talbot School of Theology at Biola University and is often playing gigs with his jam band, Cadagan, as the lead guitarist.

On the side, Nicole runs two small at-home businesses, offering photography as well as customized gluten-free cakes.

On the weekends, you can find them where they met --  at Iron Coast Church in Brunswick, ME, where they both serve every Sunday as worship leaders.

Why We Started Jaelio

  • Jaelio was started as the result of a calling to create a community that takes the greatest elements of private school and homeschool and combines them into an intimate family-style program. This approach creates an environment that allows each student to learn and flourish while integrating the guiding principles of the Christian faith.

  • We understand that the education of a child is one of the most important decisions each parent must make. Knowing that, we have created this program with not only our own six children in mind, but also for the children within our community.

What Does 'Jaelio' Even Mean?

We named Jaelio after the people that matter the most to us -- our six incredible children:

  • Jack

  • Asa

  • Emmett

  • Lillie

  • Isla Belle

  • Oliver â€‹â€‹

Our Philosophy

At Jaelio Academy, we recognize that fundamentally there are two domains of knowledge – that which is internal to each person and that which is external to each person.

However, knowledge merely about these domains and that which is contained within them is not enough for the flourishing of the human being.  For a human to flourish, they must learn to accept the truth of the external world as well as their personal internal experiences; moreover, each human must operate within their state of acceptance as their internal world collides with the external world.

Put simply, we educate our students on how to become aware and accepting of themselves (the internal) and train them on how to effectively and graciously interact with all things external to them, whether it be other humans, information, the environment, etc.

In order to achieve this end, we implement a whole-child educationapproach based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.  Each student learns about and is trained in not only these needs, but also the pinnacle of Maslow’s hierarchy, self-actualization, which we understand to be living virtuously.

At Jaelio, we do not believe that a human actually ‘reaches’ the virtues in a perfected way, but rather we believe that the pursuit of the virtues itself is self-actualization.  Of course, we cannot do this on our own power, so we rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to transform our lives.

To educate the whole of each child, we also train each student in the areas of executive functioning and the different learning styles.  This allows each student to build awareness as to how they best process information, thus building proficiency by utilizing their strengths to cultivate their areas of functional growth.

Here is a list of the 10 areas of executive functioning:

  • Task initiation (starting work without procrastination)

  • Time management (estimating and allocating time)

  • Organization (managing materials, thoughts, and tasks)

  • Planning & prioritizing (breaking goals into steps)

  • Working memory (holding information while using it)

  • Sustained attention (staying focused until completion)

  • Emotional control (managing frustration and stress)

  • Response inhibition (pausing before reacting)

  • Metacognition (knowing how one learns best)

  • Flexibility & stress tolerance (adjusting when things shift)

  • Goal-directed persistence (sticking with a task)

And here are the 8 learning styles:

1. Visual
